GMO Foods: Have We Created a Monster?

Genetically Modified Food - Not so Good For Us?

Regardless of how you feel about the issue, some things are undeniably pointing to the notion that corporate fascism is gaining more momentum in America.   One of the largest dangers that are still conveniently being overlooked by big corporations in pursuit of the bottom line is the use of GMO, or genetically modified foods.  GMO foods started just like most gene splicing ordeals did (Jurassic Park, Species, Splice with Adam Brody, etc.)… with the best intentions.  Corporate farms wanted to find a way to mitigate losses, so they began injecting their produce with a genetically modified organism that would mutate the genetic code of the food, making them more resistant to a type of pesticide, less dependant on water, etc.

However, if there was any single entity that could single handedly prove that the road to hell really is paved with good intentions is true, it would be corporations.  A recent study on Canola flowers found that 80% of 400 plants that were sampled had at least one genetically monitored gene, or transgene. Canola flowers were found not only along roads but in ballparks, grocery stores and even cemeteries.  After further testing, they found that a few samples were “super strains” made to be chemically resistant to pesticides such as LibertyLink and Roundup Ready (two of the most popular pesticides used today)

What’s so bad about some extra weeds sprouting up everywhere, right?  Apparently, genetically altered foods can prove to be deadly.  In Japan, GMOs were banned after several deaths and hundreds afflicted with severe metabolic and mental damage when a modified bacteria was used in protein drinks.  The modified bacteria ended up creating a new amino acid that is not found in nature, which led to the epidemic, and not too long after, GMOs being banned in Japan.

GMOs are banned in many other countries as well, including Japan, Australia, and the UK.  Sadly, it will probably take an epidemic with a considerable number of deaths before we see any ban on GMOs in America, though.  Creating a genetically-engineered foods have no place in the ecosystem anyway, so it’s not very surprising that doing so results in such catastrophes.  While there’s really no way for us to stop the environmental detriments of GMOs, we can at least avoid foods that have been modified themselves.  All you need to do is look for the certified “organic” label.

Be natural. Anything that goes against nature will fire back. I think the key lesson here is “eat less, enjoy more”.

It’s one of those things – the more you know the better you do. Right now many people don’t think about what they are buying and what is inside of it so we need many more articles like this to get people thinking.

    Thanks for the comment Alexander

I just don’t understand why they really need to do that. Well, for whatever reason it may be, for me, it’s not good and we still deserve fresh fruits/vegetables (not artificially produced). I know it’s a matter of choice. But we might not know what will be the effects of those. Good that there are some countries that are banning GMOs. They really care.

I like that first comment to always choose natural.

Anyway, good job for this blog.

I like this article too! And you are right, we DO deserve fresh fruits and vegetables – everyone does. I don’t think there are tons of people that understand what is really going on with their food. That’s why there needs to be many more articles like this one (thanks again Eric for writing it!) and more conversations about what we are really putting into our bodies.

This post really reminds me to develop a garden around my house and plant my needed vegetables and fruits there so I know where my harvests comes from. It’s not very healthy to use GMO’s so I’m a bit glad that some countries are banning it to protect their people because they care. No wonder organic labels are sprouting these days.

      Hi Monica,

That’s what I want – an acreage where I can literally plant tons of vegetables for the year. My mother-in-law used to grow everything that she could possibly grow…and then she moved so we have to depend on the farmers market now. It’s much better to pick the stuff our of your garden though. It brings you closer to nature and makes you feel organic!

I used to ask before why organic food costs higher than GMO foods. When I realized that it is because of the precious time farmers had to wait before another harvest, it made a lot of sense to me. If there is anything I love from the years that past, that was when all food are fresh and free from being genetically modified. You can’t even be sure if the salad you ordered is safe. If I only have a green thumb, then I can plant my own veggies right in my own backyard.

    • Kari February 7, 2012 at 3:45 pm #

I don’t think it takes much of a green thumb anymore! They make it so easy to grow your own food at home now!

We have some over-the-deck pots for this year and we are going to throw in some herbs, onions, garlic, tomatoes – etc… I’m thinking as long as we stick to the how-to on the packages we should be good to go!

But yes, I can imagine that not to long ago it wasn’t an option to have good or bad food – you just ate real food because that’s all there was.

I’m planning to buy some pots when I have time in these coming weeks with my daughter. She is excited to have our mini backyard even if tomatoes or peppers only grew in pots! It doesn’t matter if you have a small or large area around your house to plant organic vegetables as long as you eat freshly picked and organic harvest which is safe for your health.
